Great Martyr Catherine of Alexandria. Russian Orthodox icon. Great martyr Catherine is sitting next to the wheel that the pagan emperor Maximinus threatened to use to break her and force her to deny Christ. Catherine resisted this threat and was soon martyred for her Christian faith in the year 305. Behind her in this icon are shown the burning bush and Prophet Moses on Mount Horeb. Her relics were miraculously translated by angels to the top of Mount Sinai, which is shown on the right side of this icon, just above the wheel.
