Dimitry Great Martyr

Great Martyr Dimitry of Thessaloniki.  Russian Orthodox Icon.  This icon actually shows St. Dimitry slaying the pagan gladiator Lyaeus, even though it was through his prayers and blessing that his young Christian disciple St. Nestor had actually fought and was victorious over the gladiator in 306 AD. The enraged pagan emperor Maximian immediately martyred both St Nestor and St. Dimitry after his favorite pagan gladiator had been vanquished. In the 7th century myrrh began to flow from St. Dimitry's relics, which today are still located in Thessaloniki.
