Comfort Mother of God

Comfort (Consolation) Mother of God Icon. In the year 807 pirates were outside the gate at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece. The unaware abbot was about to hand the keys to a monk to open the gate, but a voice came from the icon warning them not to open the gate. At that moment Christ's hand visibly moved on the icon and covered the lips of His Mother and His Voice said the sinful monks needed to be turned over to the pirates' swords to punish them for their transgressions. But the Theotokos pulled His hand away from her lips saying that these were her monks and she was going to save them from certain disaster. The icon froze in this new position and still can be seen today in the Vatopedi Monastery.
