Blachernae Mother of God

Blachernae Mother of God Russian Orthodox Icon. The original Blachernae icon was made in the 7th century using wax and the ashes from 6th century Christian martyrs. It was kept at the Church of Saint Mary of Blachernae in Constantinople probably up until the fall of the city in the mid-15th century. In the mid-17th century this icon, or perhaps a copy, appeared on Mount Athos and was sent to Moscow. Many old and new copies of this icon are to be found in Russia.

#3 - S (2½" x 3½" on ½" wood).
